‘EXPLORING THE PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY OF MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS’
June, 9-11, 2011, VU University, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

The Management Consulting Division (MCD) of the Academy of Management invites researchers, educators, consulting practitioners and executives to participate in the debate on the professional identity of management consultants during presentations, symposia and workshops.

The management consulting profession is young and emerging, and its social status highly ambiguous. It does not have professional standards or accreditation criteria like in medicine and law, there are low barriers to entry, and a broad range of tasks is undertaken in the name of consulting.

A crucial aspect of what constitutes such a loosely defined profession is the identity of its members. The professional identity of management consultants is continuously developing through the various ways management consultants identify themselves and how others identify them.

The upcoming Management Consulting Division Conference in Amsterdam aims to explore the dynamic and multiple ways the professional identity of management consultants is being constituted, answering questions such as: How do clients and academics see consultants? How do consultants and consultancies see themselves? How are consultants’ contributions viewed in society?
